We are currently investigating the optimum conditions for hatching Delta Smelt eggs in the wild. Our current lab practice is optimized to hatch good quality eggs within 10 days of spawning, though it is important to consider the conditions in which the eggs are spawned in the wild. We are studying the effects of salinity and flow rate on the survival and condition of Delta Smelt eggs. This will inform the egg frame trials detailed below as well as the conservation of suitable breeding grounds, giving Delta Smelt a better chance of survival in the wild.
